Agrigento and Ragusa

We read in preparing for our trip that Sicily was a province of Greece before the birth of Christ and there were ancient Greek temples still standing in Agrigento.

We made the Valley of the Temples one of our “to see” stops.

Our Drive south through the middle of the island from Palermo to Agrigento kept giving us new best views  The country continues to be mountainous with valleys covered with vineyards and olive groves.  I wish I knew more about the other crops we are seeing, many are being grown in very long, white cloth covered archways… and there are thousands of them.

Communities are located high on the mountains, above land suitable for farming.   The houses are all similar in construction and seem to be color coded to match.  The smaller is better theory continues in most every aspect of the Europe we’ve seen, especially the roadways.

We’re traveling by car, Opal Corsica (Ralph Nader would have a few things to say about this one) and getting lots of miles in.  We’ve chosen the byways rather than the motorways and our “rule of the Italian road” learning curve is steep. First, no traffic control signs, we’re talking no stop signs and three or four stop lights for the entire trip, even in big cities. Turn signals just confuse local drivers. You just take care of yourself and don’t get in the way or you’ll get some of the signals they do have.

The Valley of the Temples in Agrigento displays several reasonably well preserved temples and artifacts dating from 6 B.C. to 20 A.D., important biblical times.  Seeing relics with origins in some of the years of our Lord is significant.

On we travel, to the city of Ragusa a town on the Mediterranean, agin with mountains; and we are on top of the tallest in the area.  We knew we were going to a neat place but we didn’t know just how neat until we arrived.  I’ve complimented Pam’s carful planning of our travels before, and this plan is worthy of additional mention.   I’ll let the pictures do the most of talking but please know that this one is over the top.  Best balcony ever and the moon showed up for the pic!

And now, we drive. On to Ortgia.  Jim
