Taormina

Wonderful sleep, windows open, covers pulled up, cool breeze and I made Pam sleep on her stomach so no snoring. Another, one night stand, two in a row but no more for the trip. The quick stops have given us a high level assessment of a number of places we might want to revisit.

We checked out of the apartment this morning and wandered around Ortigia, found a neat sidewalk spot

to eat a breakfast snack before turning in the rental and heading for the train station. We wasted the high dollar insurance we took on the rental, not a scratch. The train station in Ortigia is small but easy and our train to Taormina was on time.  A two hour ride along the Med coast was not nearly long enough.

Our apartment is located on the second level of the city, way up the mountain.

So cab it is to get located. After a exhilarating one-lane, hairpin ride up the mountain we reached our B&B, Casa Cariddi Boutique Apartment. Don’t know about the boutique but this may be Pam’s hit of the trip. Our balcony is on the hallmark corner of the berg, looks out on the Mediterranean and, for once, it’s big enough for a table and chairs.

However, the 100€ per night is Wold Class lodging at “We’ll leave the light on for you” prices. We love the off season.

We explored the nooks and hideaways of Taormina for a few hours, sampled the local granita and people stalked until dusk.

We had a number of local hot spot restaurants tagged but the leftover from Ortigia bread, cheese, olives, wine, Monica chocolate and Blue Sea balcony called us home for a dine-in dinner. Right decision.
OK now for reality, get the clothes in the mini-washing machine and prepare for the rest of the trip. We’ve become proficient at deciphering European machines, and hanging clothes in creative places to dry.

Tomorrow, we (Pam) have arranged for a guide to show us Mt. Etna and then to a winery for tour, tastings and lunch. She (guide) picks us up at 9:00.  Thanks, BeeBop
